Moisture and droplets of water form on the surface of the window

Windows are the eyes of the home—letting in light and fresh air, and defining its curbside appeal. Apart from those, these home fixtures also keep your home energy efficient. However, one thing threatens their integrity: window condensation.

It happens when hot air comes into contact with a cold window surface such as your exterior window unit. Though it’s normal, it can have serious implications on your windows and their performance.

In this article, we’ll take a closer view of what causes window condensation, how you can prevent it, and some solutions to keep your home fixtures in good condition.

Understanding Condensation Inside Windows

When warm, humid air inside your home comes into contact with your windows, it clashes with the cold and dry air outside and causes condensation inside your windows. It’s normal in single-pane windows, but for double or triple-pane windows, this could mean seal failure in your insulated glass unit.

Foggy windows are a sign that you should reduce indoor humidity or get your windows replaced. If you let it be, you could encounter mould and mildew growth, unpleasant odours, reduced energy efficiency, and structural damage. The last one is particularly concerning, as prolonged exposure to excess moisture can cause some of your wooden windows to rot and decay.

This would lead to expensive replacements or repairs. Moreover, the overall energy efficiency of your home may decrease, leading to higher utility bills.

Now, to reduce window condensation on double or triple-pane windows, it’s important to figure out where the moisture is occurring. Observe if it’s pooling on the inside of your windows, outside of the glass, or between the glass panes.

How to Stop Condensation Between Window Panes

While condensation on windows isn’t always a bad thing, condensation in between window panes can have damaging effects. The water could pool and lead to water damage, mould, or wood rot.

Double-pane windows also have a layer of gas that reduces heat loss and acts as insulation between the glass panes. Other windows have a special thin film installed between window panes, which splits it into two glass panes, leading to better insulation and energy-efficient windows

Now, if your double-pane windows are starting to fog, it means that your insulated glass unit cannot perform at optimal levels. You’ll only lose more energy and end up with higher bills.

To avoid this costly expense, here’s what you can do:

Increase Ventilation

A good way to reduce moist air in your living spaces is to improve ventilation in that area. Use fans or open your windows every so often to ensure air circulates inside your home. Opening window treatments such as your blinds or drapes can also improve ventilation in that room.

Using ceiling fans even in the winter can also reduce the condensation on your windows. Just make sure the fans rotate clockwise to push warm, humid air back to the floor. Additionally, appliances, such as radiators and dryers, may need a ventilation system to limit the amount of warm air and moisture they release within the home.

Check Your HVAC System

Sometimes, malfunctioning or poorly set-up HVAC units cause condensation inside your windows. To prevent this, call in a professional and have your HVAC unit checked or repaired.

Similarly, you can use a portable or standalone dehumidifier to reduce moist air in areas not connected to HVAC units. These also help balance your home’s humidity levels and prevent mould and mildew growth.

Use a Moisture Eliminator

Alternatively, you can also buy a moisture eliminator that uses crystals or granules to absorb excess moisture in the air. These come in packs or bags that you can hang in damp places or in buckets you can place on the floor.

Add Weatherstripping to Your Windows

This is a low-cost way to keep warm air inside your home. Weatherstripping seals the gaps between the edges of your windows when they’re closed, preventing air leaks and drafts from coming into your living spaces. This means less work for your HVAC unit and improved energy efficiency for your home.

Leave the Door Open

Similar to the point above, leaving your interior doors open can help reduce window condensation. Doing so throughout your home encourages airflow, improving air circulation and preventing humidity from building up in an area in your home.

Replace Your Window Glass

If none of these stop or prevent window condensation, replace your glass panels with low-E counterparts. These provide better insulation, reduce condensation and fogging, and improve your window’s overall performance.

However, the best option would be to replace the entire window, especially if your window units are old and are showing signs of significant wear and tear. Make sure to purchase one from a reputable manufacturer that offers Energy S-approved windows to ensure the units can help reduce your energy bills.
