How to Measure a Door For Replacement

Tools Needed for Measuring a Door

Before you dive right into the measuring process, make sure you have a measuring tape, pen, and paper on hand. It’s also recommended to familiarize yourself with the anatomy of a door first, in order to better understand the components mentioned below.

Measuring a Door With a Frame in 5 Steps

Step 1: Start by measuring the width of your existing door. Do this by running the tape measure across the horizontal expanse of the door from left to right. It is important to measure only the door and not the surrounding frame.

For those who don’t have access to measure a door at the moment, you can measure the inside of the frame instead.

Step 2: Next, proceed with measuring the height of the door. Simply place your measuring tape vertically from top to bottom.

If there is no door installed at the moment, measure the inside of the top of the frame all the way down to the floor.

Step 3: Measure the other angles as needed. Wear and tear could cause a door to deform slightly, so it’s always a good idea to measure the height and width in various areas. This applies especially to wooden doors.

Here’s how it works: first, measure the width towards the top, in the middle, and toward the bottom.

Next, go for the height to the left, the middle, and the right-hand side.

When you’ve completed this task, you should have six measurements. Find the largest measurements for the height and width, and give them to your contractor for reference.

Step 4: Measure the thickness of the door.

Step 5: Measure the door frame. The door frame measurements are equally important, as this is where the door will be placed when closed. Naturally, you’d want them to match like hand in glove.

To do this accurately, all you have to do is run your measuring tool up the inside of the door frame from the highest point to the lowest point. Afterwards, measure the frame across the top, the centre, and then the bottom.

Remember, when in doubt, round up!

When Should I Replace My Front Door?

Front doors work hard every day, so it’s important to monitor and recognize the signs for when they need maintenance or a replacement.

Damage

Minor damages can be fixed with a paint job or hardware replacement, but if your front door is already beyond repair, it’s time for a new one. This is imperative in terms of home security.

Drafts

If you notice drafts coming through your front door, your energy bills are in danger of skyrocketing. Maintain the temperature of your home by investing in a new door.

Faulty Functionality

A door is made to open and close with ease. If it starts to become hard to handle, it could be a sign that the hinges are wearing out.

Moisture On The Glass

If your front door has a glass panel, be on the lookout for condensation. This could lead to mould or mildew, both of which are harmful to your health.
